This past January(2007) I have been seeing a Kidney Specialist, Dr Sandy Popham. After 35 yrs of diabetes I have kidney damage. My kidneys have been staple since 2004 but are to the point where I need to start looking into a transplant. Dr Popham has been treating me so I won't need dialysis. She told me I'm so active, hunting fishing, outdoor activities, that with dialysis would end all that. Needing to be in 3 days a week. So the next option is a transplant. I've had heart and lung tests to make sure my body can handle operations. All my tests came out, as the cardiologist said, "Perfect". All my medical records and test results will be send to Fairview Hospital. So in early 2008 I'll have a exam and interview there. Then be placed on the transplant list. With diabetics getting a kidney transplant they will also put me on the pancreas transplant list also. It doesnt always happen that both a kidney and pancreas comes available at same time. So most likely I'll got through 2 separate transplant operations. Dr Popham has told me that once I'm placed on the transplant list can take an average of 6 yrs to receive the organ. She has told me I'm healthy for now and still young. So a transplant(kidney and pancreas) will extend my lifespan.
I will keep everyone informed, through my blog how the process is proceeding and when I'm placed on the transplant list.
